    • Irfan : A tremendous book on spirituality needed by the world

Ihya Uloom ud-Deen (translation of the book title: "Revival of Knowledge of Path to God") is one of the best scholarly books on Islam ever written in history. Imam Ghazali brings out the deep inner wisdom behind all Islamic injunctions besides the outer rulings. Imam Yahya bin Sharfuddin an-Nawawi said that if all the books of Islam are gone except this one, Islam will still survive through it. Such is the comprehensiveness of this book by Imam Ghazali (1058-1111 AD). The books flows with tremendous ease and clarity leading the reader to higher spiritual teachings of Islam that give Islam its real beauty. Imam Ghazali wrote this book for ordinary readers so they benefit from it and put their lives on a spiritual path providing them practical steps to aid their spiritual struggle. The book has 4 volumes with about 2800 pages total. Muhammad Mahdi al-Sharief did a very good job in his English translation from the original Arabic. Original verses of Quran in Arabic along with their source references are also included in his English translation. Source references of Hadiths (Prophet Muhammad's traditions) are also included in this English translation and that was a pleasant surprise for me. Before this nice translation was published in 2011, the only complete English translation of this great book that was available in the market was by a Pakistani translation by Fazlul Karim that was published in 1971. Fazlul Karim's translation is below par as his translation shows a lack of command of both Arabic and English and he skipped 50% of Ihya in his English translation and did not provide any source references of Quranic verses and Hadiths. Fazlul Karim's translation is only 1200 pages that is enough to show that 50% of Ihya was skipped by him in his translation. There was a tremendous need of a good and complete English translation and Muhammad Mahdi al-Sharief and publisher Dar al-Kutub al-Ilmiyyah in Beirut, Lebanon fulfilled this great need. The paper and print quality of the book is quite good, quality of translation is good, and delivery service is also very good as I received it within 10 days in US although it was shipped from Lebanon. I very highly recommend this great book to anyone who wants to learn about Islam in general and abour spirituality in particular. I would also recommend the seller jamalon.com.
