Royal Families World Wide

Royal Families World Wide

Royal Families Worldwide is a handy and up-to-date guide to over fifty royal families around the world with an introduction on modern monarchy.

The arrangement is alphabetical by country, but some countries have more than one royal family, either because there are rival claimants, as in France, or because within a modern state there is more than one royal family, such as Germany or Uganda. For ease of reference and comparison the information is arranged under standard headings, but cultural differences around the world mean that some information is regarded as private in some countries.

During the twentieth century democracy has been regarded as the best form of government, and monarchy has been viewed as undemocratic and old fashioned. However, as the essay on modern monarchy points out, democracy by itself is no guarantee of greater social harmony and justice. On the contrary, those countries which have retained their monarchies have generally enjoyed greater political stability, and in Spain the restoration of the monarchy not only facilitated the return of democracy, but also helped preserve it.

Thus a hereditary element in democratic constitution and a royal family with a long tradition of service may prove an advantage.
